Southgate set to be England temporary manager, media say
It was little surprise that Roy Hodgson quickly resigned after England’s dismal exit from the Euros, but it is certainly a big surprise that Arsene Wenger was quickly installed as one of the favourites to take over, perhaps next summer when his contract with Arsenal will end.

Hodgson stood down as England manager after the 2-1 defeat by Iceland in the last 16 of Euro 2016 on Monday night, announcing his decision from a written statement.
A three-man panel will consider non-English candidates to replace Roy Hodgson as England manager, Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn says.
Glenn hopes to have appointed a successor by the start of England’s 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign in early September, but said that if not, “we have an interim plan in mind”.
“We are not talking about names today, but it would be a pretty obvious one to pick”.
“I’ve just been charged the equivalent of around thirty pounds for a five minute run to the airport”, said Michael Flynn, 26, and from north London.
“We have a major bridge to fix – had we played better last night that might not need repairing”.
“The Premier League clubs all want home-grown players to get through because it makes financial sense”. A good one will help, certainly, but until issues of coaching, youth development and structure are addressed, and there’s a more realistic outlook on what to expect from a team that has won just six games in the knockout stages of global tournaments since 1996, then it’d be a foolish man to take the job on. “Probably not. He might not want it”. “He’s got the passion and the knowledge and he’s one of the best players England ever had”.
None of those men should be anywhere near such an important job as far as I am concerned.
Defender Ragnar Sigurdsson, who scored Iceland’s first goal and made an outstanding last-ditch tackle to deny Jamie Vardy a potential equalizer, said he had “dreamt … a long time ago” of playing England.
“Dan is primed to go and do that, but the process will involve a wider consultation within the game”. We are going to be canvassing opinion from former managers, former players to make sure that we get a lot of wisdom. Hodgson joins a list of losers that includes Steve McClaren, Sven Goran-Eriksson and Graham Taylor – all abject failures in a position of power that any half decent manager would have achieved relative success in.
Baker said the torment of getting heckled by fans wasn’t almost enough punishment for the team of superstars that let their country down to fall to a country with just 100 professional players.

Each time the demands of a job, which now pays £3.5 million per year but which many view as impossibly hard, have defeated football’s finest minds. I have no problem with Gareth going in and taking the job but I would like to see someone come in above him who has experienced this situation before because the U21 situation and the full squad are totally different.
