It did not affect in-flight or safety systems, Hawkins said.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

A spokeswoman for San Jose International Airport did not immediately return a request for comment, and a representative from Southwest Airlines said she could not immediately provide a comment about the delays.

The Southwest Airlines computer system was partially back online just before 7 p.m. but there was no word on when it would be fully restored. On October 2015, more than 800 flights were delayed. “We apologize to our Customers whose travel plans are impacted”. “It’s not over yet”.

“We were not expecting this for sure”, said passenger Susan Freitag.

CBS Chicago reported that automated check-in and baggage systems were down and passengers were being checked in by hand on paper tickets. RDU officials tweeted that Southwest is processing travelers and lines are beginning to move swiftly.

That probably won’t placate the thousands of customers who took to social media to complain about the delays. The airline said the computer issues had resulted in 600 to 700 canceled and delayed flights across its network.

Most of the self-service kiosks either worked only sporadically or not at all. Without passes, customers griped that they were unable to go through security.

Flights from Delta Air Lines and Virgin America, which also operate out of Love Field, were not affected. After the ground stop was lifted, flights were left flights backlogged. It will take time before the budget airline resumes a normal operation, he said.
