Southwest Airlines passengers scramble to rebook flights after computer glitch

Southwest Airlines issued an update and apology Thursday morning and said most of its systems were back online, but cancellations and delays were expected. After “a day of recovery”, the airline hoped to be operating normally on Friday, said CEO Gary Kelly. By late Wednesday night, the airline tweeted that it was still manually checking in passengers. Airlines have sprawling, overlapping and complicated technology systems, and even brief outages can cause thousands of passengers to be stranded for hours. Southwest had sent out a warning that anyone with a flight booked for today should check the status online and get to the airport extra early.

Hundreds of passengers faced major troubles traveling because their plans were canceled as well so there was frustration among customers. Last October, an estimated 800 Southwest flights were delayed when a software application malfunctioned, forcing employees to issue tickets and boarding passes by hand.

Our earlier story, posted Wednesday. Southwest’s website crashed, and the airline briefly held up all departing flights on Wednesday. The stop was eventually lifted, but delays continued to frustrate customers at Los Angeles International Airport.

The airline did manual check-ins at Lambert as well.

“We’ve already had to cancel out seeing one friend”, she said. Across the country in total, 16 flights were canceled and 245 were delayed.
