The Soyuz capsule carrying NASA astronaut Jeff Williams and Russia’s Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Oleg Skripochka lands just after sunrise in Kazakhstan. He right then beats the previous record holder, Scott Kelly, for the three-flight in space with a total of 520 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes last March.
The trio who landed 90 miles southeast of the Kazakh town of Dzhezkazgan, were met by Russian recovery team members, who helped the astronauts with their readjustment to gravity.
Spaceflight Now reports that outgoing station commander Jeff Williams will join Russian cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Oleg Skripochka for a trip back to Earth on Tuesday.
NASA’s cancellation of a prominent ISS broadcast has triggered widespread speculation that the prevalent UFO sightings around the space station are to blame. Meanwhile, three other space adventurers, Russia’s Anatoly Ivanishin-who will now command the the $100 billion outpost, American Kathleen Rubins and Japan’s Takuya Onishi will stay on the ISS, until the next expedition arrives.
The Russians remain champions of long-duration spaceflight, with cosmonaut Gennady Padalka now the world record-holder with 878 days in space over five missions.
Alright, I could look at Jeff’s Twitter account all day. “Have fun riding though the atmosphere, enjoy seeing plasma in the windows and have a very safe, and exceptionally soft, landing”.
Asked what he was looking forward to the most, Williams said “obviously, family is the first thing, my wife, she’s the real hero in all this putting up with me being up here that many days”.
Mr Williams was instrumental in preparing the station for the future arrival of USA commercial crew spacecraft, NASA said.
The most experienced NASA astronaut in history and two Russian cosmonauts have just completed a huge mission aboard the ISS.
The space juggernaut also sung Mr Williams’ praises for his role in installing the first ISS docking adapter in August, during a six-hour spacewalk.
The Russian cosmonaut has spent a whopping 879 days in space, that’s almost two and a half years! NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough and Russian cosmonauts Andrey Borisenko and Sergey Ryzhikov will join the crew aboard the space station on September 23.
