SpaceX celebrates historical upright landing for its Falcon 9 rocket
For the first time in history, the first stage of a rocket blazing to orbit with a payload, separated successfully from the upper stage at high speed, turned around and then flew back for a successful rocket assisted upright touchdown back on the ground.

The successful launch also marked SpaceX’s return after its last rocket exploded during takeoff on June 28.
“The Falcon Has Landed!” gushed exuberant SpaceX officials during a live webscast.
Liftoff! SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, carrying a payload of 11 communications satellites, launches from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
SpaceX had tried at least twice before, and now finally succeeded in bringing a section of the 23-story tall Falcon 9 rocket back to the landing pad.
A nine-minute photo exposure shows the streaks in the sky made by the Falcon 9 as it launches, re-enters the atmosphere, and lands.

The accomplishment could signal an era where spaceflight might be just a smidge more affordable.
Musk and others have said that making a reusable rocket would reduce costs by a factor of a hundred – thereby making interplanetary travel possible. Previously the first stage of rockets were considered a loss and splashed back to Earth into the ocean.
The mission, capped by delivery of all 11 satellites to orbit for launch customer ORBCOMM, unfolded in just over 30 minutes.
