SpaceX completes first ever vertical landing
The mission was also the first time SpaceX has successfully landed a rocket after sending it into space.

After launching 11 small communications satellites, the Hawthorne, California-based spaceflight company did something that’s never been done: shoot a rocket into orbit then return it to Earth in a controlled, vertical landing.
“The Falcon Has Landed!” gushed exuberant SpaceX officials during a live webscast.
A rocket flying toward the ground is usually a bad sign, but for aerospace company SpaceX, it was a huge success.
Here’s an expanding galley of photos and video for the Dec 21, 2015 launch and landing at Cape Canaveral.
Weather and other delays kept its comeback flight grounded this weekend, but SpaceX launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station without a hitch on Monday evening. About two minutes into the flight, the rocket’s first-stage separated cleanly from the second stage and began a controlled descent back to Earth.
“It’s a revolutionary moment”, Musk told reporters after the landing.
SpaceX’s rocket deployed 11 satellites for telecommunications company ORBCOMM of Fort Lee, N.J. after lifting off from Cape Canaveral, Fla. The company has planned two more Falcon 9 launches for next month, and intends to resume its NASA-funded resupply missions to the International Space Station in February. It aims to resume supply missions to the space station in February.
SpaceX, headed by Internet tycoon Elon Musk, is striving to revolutionise the rocket industry, which now loses many millions of dollars in jettisoned machinery and sophisticated rocket components after each launch. Monday’s launch was the first since SpaceX redesigned and upgraded the powerful rocket.
Creating reusable rockets is important for lowering the cost of space travel, which could make space tourism and a trip to Mars more feasible.

Refurbishing and reusing rockets would cut the company’s operational costs. “The Falcon first stage landing is confirmed”, SpaceX wrote on Twitter. The Blue Origin flight in November traveled 100 times higher and reached the edge of outer space. “It’s the first one we’ve brought back”.
