Well, it also managed the more hard feat of landing the rocket back on earth in an upright position. Removing this enormous expense would drastically bring down launch costs, making it a more financially viable opportunity for companies.
“It’s a revolutionary moment”, Musk told reporters after the landing.
Other reusable space craft have previously landed back on Earth, including the Space Shuttle and manned capsules, but no rocket has been able to survive the process.
The mission delivered a constellation of 11 communication satellites into orbit and signals the start of cheaper space travel. After the satellites continued into space, the booster engines turned around and landed safely back at Cape Canaveral. Bezos’s single-stage rocket was easier to fly and less powerful than Musk’s, and was bound by the 62-mile-high limit of suborbital space. At this time, the initial launch went well, but the rocket exploded once it went supersonic.

Several previous attempts to land the Falcon 9’s first stage on a platform at sea off the coast from Jacksonville, Florida, have failed.
The successful landing could pave the way for the use of reusable rockets in future and will give a huge boost to privately-owned space exploration companies such as SpaceX.
The rocket, which had 18 straight achievements before the fateful flight, was in the procedure for sending a cargo ship to the International Space Station (ISS).

Monday’s launch was delayed one day, a calculated move to ensure a safe landing.
