SpaceX rocket explosion is impacting Sioux City students
The Air Force plans to release a solicitation for launch service proposals this month, the first time SpaceX, which is owned and operated by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, will be eligible to compete against United Launch Alliance (ULA). That decision, already postponed twice, is now scheduled for September.

Orbital Sciences and SpaceX have NASA contracts to ship cargo. Today’s launch attempt will not deter us from our ambitious human spaceflight program,”Bolden said”. This is the third failed mission in a row for SpaceX. “Not that failures won’t happen”.
“The cost to the government of course is what was on the rocket, which is food, and all sorts of other cargo materials and part of a docking system for future commercial manned launches to the space station”, he said. Branson’s Virgin Galactic, a backer of OneWeb, scored 39 of those launches, a significant win for the company after a test flight crashed past year, killing one of the pilots. Among the targets has been a program under which NASA gave contracts to SpaceX and Boeing Co.to develop spacecraft to fly astronauts to the space station. As Scott Kelly, an astronaut aboard the station, put it on Twitter after Sunday’s accident: “Space is hard”.
“I would bet on the genius billionaire before the cynics”, he said. Those missionaries integrated 6 station freight functions for NASA while having 15-flight get worthy of greater than $2bn.
SpaceX has almost 50 launches, worth more than $7 billion, on its schedule.
“We were the first (commercial customer) to use SpaceX in December 2013 and have never regretted taking that important step”, said Markus Payer, vice president of communications with Luxembourg-based SES, which had booked an August Falcon ride for an Asian communications satellite.
Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) defended SpaceX on Monday after its Falcon 9 rocket exploded two minutes after a launch over the weekend.
The company has come very close to pulling off the unprecedented feat of landing a 14-storey tall rocket booster upright on the platform it calls a “drone ship” floating in the Atlantic Ocean after hurtling through the sky.
In the past, new rockets typically failed several times in their early missions, as engineers perfected designs and tweaked operations. Musk said the crash was due to “slower than expected throttle valve response”.
“There was some kind of anomaly during first stage flight”, the commentator said, noting that the rocket had ignited its nine Merlin engines and reached supersonic speed. And SpaceX is one of several companies pursuing ways to do it. Its New Shepard vehicle would launch, then return to Earth, touching down vertically. They said more failures were expected as the industry launched more rockets – work once done only by NASA.
On, July 3, the Russians are scheduled to fly another Progress 59 to the station before three more crew members arrive later in the month.
Orbital executives blamed that failure on a fuel pump in one of the rocket’s 40-year-old Russian engines. Sunday’s cargo mission was the seventh under the NASA contract.

Had Sunday’s failed Falcon 9 mission been manned rather than unmanned, astronauts on board would likely have survived the disaster due to the Dragon’s launch escape system, a spokesperson for the company said. “Looking [forward] to it feeling normal one day”.
