SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket
Last night SpaceX launched its Falcon 9 rocket into orbit and landed the first stage vertically on a Cape Canaveral pad.

It is, no doubt, a big win for CEO Musk and SpaceX, but it’s not the first time when a rocket has landed successfully on earth after launching into space. In its previous attempts, SpaceX had tried to land the rocket on ocean platforms, but with no success. Safely landing rockets is also expected to herald improvements in propulsion that would make humans land and take off from Mars.
While the Falcon 9 landing was “an important” step toward reusable rockets, Pace said, SpaceX engineers still have a lot of work to do.
Musk said a company-led investigation had pointed to the failure of a 2-foot strut holding one of many helium bottles on the rocket’s second stage.
SpaceX is back in the spaceflight game after an almost-six-month hiatus. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off over Cocoa Beach, Fla., at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Monday, Dec. 21, 2015. There is no denying the fact that bringing it back and then landing it right was something that many thought was impossible. The SpaceX booster was more powerful and flying faster in order to put satellites into orbit. SpaceX is leasing the touchdown area from the Air Force.
Johnson estimates Leading Edge has produced 20 to 30 tools for Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX, a 13-year-old company led by billionaire Elon Musk that aims to develop reusable rockets to drive down the costs of space travel.
Just two minutes after launch that day, the Falcon 9 disintegrated, destroying food and other supplies greatly needed on board the space station. So far, they have managed to land the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket.

But while SpaceX surpassed Blue Origins’ accomplishment this week, that wasn’t the case back in November when Musk first went off on his Twitter rant.
