SpaceX Seeks to Launch Spacecraft, Then Safely Land Rocket at Cape Canaveral
SpaceX confirmed the rocket’s first stage, a slender cylindrical kerosene-fed rocket body standing 156 feet tall, will aim for a controlled touchdown at a landing pad the company rented from the U.S. Air Force less than six miles south of the Falcon 9’s Complex 40 launch pad.

On Sunday, Musk, the billionaire tech entrepreneur, tweeted that the reason the company delayed the flight to Monday was because there was a 10 percent better chance of successfully landing the rocket.
Will this be the rocket that finally returns safely to Earth – making history and reshaping space travel to boot? SpaceX landed a rocket named Grasshopper vertically two years ago, but that one didn’t go into space. The company’s rockets cost between $60 and $90 million.
“It’s really a massive difference if we can make reusability work”, Musk told reporters last week. If SpaceX is successful, it will be the second company to land a rocket stage (after Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin performed the feat last month) and the first to do it with an orbital rocket.
The launch will be live streamed, with coverage beginning at 8:00 p.m. EST.
SpaceX has warned residents on the Space Coast that they could hear a sonic boom as a result of the landing attempt. Orbcomm’s communications networks are created to track, monitor and control fixed and mobile assets in industries that include transportation and distribution, heavy equipment, oil and gas, and maritime tracking and navigation.
“This isn’t to take anything away from Blue Origin’s awesome accomplishment”, said Tim Urban.

Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. of Hawthorne is scheduled to launch an unmanned Falcon 9 rocket this evening, marking the company’s first launch attempt since June, during which the rocket exploded.
