In June 2014 the Falcon 9 had exploded en route to the International Space Station. And shortly after the flight, the Hawthorne, California-based company released wonderful photos showing the Falcon 9 rocket as it landed. Because after more than a year of trying, it was the first time the USA company was able to land one of its rockets upright, taking a big step towards the viability of renewable rockets. Historically, the rocket boosters for most space launches have fallen into the ocean, never to be used again.

Musk has said the ability to return his rockets to Earth so they can be refurbished and reflown would slash his company’s operational costs in the burgeoning and highly competitive private space launch industry. SpaceX spent months correcting the problem and improving the unmanned rocket.

Commercial spaceflight company SpaceX accomplished launching a rocket with a group of communications satellites into orbit. But the real payoff came when the rocket returned to Earth, landing safely and vertically on a landing pad not far from where it had launched only 10 minutes earlier. Bezos went out of his way to specify that it was the suborbital booster and that SpaceX is joining a club to which Blue Origins was previously the only member.
