‘Although the pro-independence parties confirmed their willingness to be part of the European Union, eurozone authorities suggested that, if Catalonia leaves Spain, they will have to apply for membership all over again and this would be a lengthy procedure with an uncertain outcome’. The left-wing CUP won 10 seats on Sunday and has previously lambasted Mas for invoking unpopular austerity measures.
Many Catalans who favor breaking away from Spain say their region, which represents almost a fifth of Spain’s economic output, pays too much in taxes and receives less than its fair share of government investment.
Luis Moreno Fernandez, a research professor at the Spanish National Research Council government agency, agreed that “no major step or decision” is to be expected until after December and questioned whether the two pro-independence groups would find common ground.

The Popular Party took a beating in the Catalan elections, winning just 11 seats, eight fewer than in the previous legislature.
Mas has been Catalonia’s regional president since 2010 and heads the Democratic Convergence of Catalonia (CDC) party that has played a key role in Catalan politics for decades.

In this way they asked the citizens of Catalonia to express themselves through their vote, “keeping in mind the great values that society must be built upon, such as the respect for the rights of persons, families and institutions, as well as the honesty and transparency of the political process”. The Spanish government banned Catalonia’s independence referendum bid last November.
