Villar, a Spanish lawyer, was previously the legal director, who worked under three presidents who were indicted by the U.S. Justice Department past year in an alleged bribery conspiracy.
Villar has always been one of the favourites to replace Michel Platini.
However, the RFEF confirmed in a short statement on its official website that the 66-year-old intends to put his name on the ballot papers.
Spanish Football Federation president Angel Maria Villar has announced he will stand for the Uefa presidency.
Villar is set to be challenged for the presidency by Michael van Praag, a UEFA vice president from the Netherlands, and Slovenia federation head Aleksander Ceferin.
The election will be on 14 September. He has been a UEFA vice-president since 2000. He was one of the founding members of the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE).
Bilbao-born Villar, a former Athletic Bilbao and Spain midfielder, became RFEF president in 1988 and became a FIFA Executive member in 1998.
