Spanish PM says Catalan independence resolution to have ‘no consequences’
The resolution is backed by Catalan Junts pel Si (Together for Yes) and Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) parties.

The resolution, submitted by Catalan pro-independence parties back in October, states that the “democratic mandate based on the result of the elections held on September 27, is aimed at creation of independent and sovereign Catalan state…”
Spain’s government reacted swiftly Monday. The declaration called for immediate “disobedience” to Spain’s “delegitimized” Constitutional Court and said Catalonia should not be bound by future Spanish laws or institutions. “Catalonia will not disconnect itself from anywhere, and there will be no fracture”.
He added he would meet with the leader of the main opposition Socialist Party, Pedro Sanchez, to forge a common front against the separatists.
Spain’s Constitutional Court ruled a year ago that a planned referendum on independence was unlawful; It went ahead anyway, as a non-binding vote, and about 80 percent of voters said they wanted to break with Spain.
“You want to divide a country by raising a frontier within the European Union”, Citizens regional leader Ines Arrimadas told separatist lawmakers.
On Wednesday, the Madrid Government will decide a constitutional lawsuit against the resolution of the Catalan regional Parliament in a special session, Rajoy is announced. Well, on this 18-month road map, the first order of business – within 30 days in fact – is passage of new laws to create a Catalan tax authority, also a local Catalan Social Security system. Together, they have a majority in the regional assembly, with 72 seats of the 135 seats.
Catalonia’s long and complicated connection with Spain began in the year 1150, when a royal marriage united its dynasty with that of Barcelona (the region of Catalonia had been an independent state on the Iberian Peninsula, the location of today’s Portugal and Spain). The assembly is due to vote on the presidency later Monday.
Arrimadas, along with other unionists, accused the current Catalonia President, Artur Mas, of using the enthusiasm for independence as a way to protect him and his “Convergence” party from corruption charges.
Catalonia, the triangular region in northeastern Spain, already has its own language and traditions.
The motion presented to Catalonia’s parliament did not detail what proportion of the region’s borrowings could be affected, though it suggested that bank debt held by domestic creditors would be targeted.
“The Spanish state has consistently frustrated our aspirations. That’s why we are where we are”, Mas said.
“This is a provocation of democracy … and scorns the millions of Spanish people who fought for it”, said Inés Arrimadas of Ciudadanos.

However, they still have to form a government, amid disagreement on who who should preside.
