Speaker Paul Ryan Dodges Hug from Nancy Pelosi

Former vice presidential nominee and US Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, a Republican, has been voted in by the US House of Representatives to serve as the body’s 62nd speaker of the House. All six House Democrats from the state voted for their leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, who received 184 votes. Rep. Daniel Webster of Florida, a member of the Freedom Caucus who continued his bid after Ryan won the nomination of the Republican caucus, received those votes.

Ryan looked to unify not only his own party but also the House as a whole.

He voted for outgoing Speaker John Boehner on his first day in Congress earlier this year, though he has not always been a reliable vote for Boehner’s agenda.

Fellow Republicans have nominated U.S. Representative Paul Ryan for Speaker of the House.

But before leaving, he secretly negotiated a sweeping, two-year budget deal with the White House that, if it passes Congress, would clear the decks of any major fiscal crises for the new speaker.

“I believe, with every fiber of my being, we can renew the American Idea”, Ryan said in his remarks to the House. Saluting him was Ryan. “We are wiping the slate clean”, Ryan said.

“Yesterday when they told me what happened, I felt like the moon, the stars and all of the planets had fallen on me”, Ryan said, recounting Truman’s reaction to being elevated to the presidency. He added: “We are not going to have a House that looks like it’s looked the last few years”. Ryan was Romney’s running mate.

He calls the House “the great embodiment of the American dream”.

“My concern is that our country right now is not facing up to our tax problems and we are allowing this thing to be papered over while more and more jobs are going overseas”, said Portman.

At age 45, Ryan becomes one of the youngest speakers in history and the first from Wisconsin.

Officially announcing his intent to resign as speaker and the representative from Ohio, Boehner said he leaves “with no regrets, no burdens”.

In the past, Garrett served as vice chairman of the House Budget Committee when Ryan was chairman. It was Paul Ryan, who was a student at Miami University at the time. “I’m just a regular guy humbled by the chance to do a big job”, he said.

Boehner has refused to bring antidiscrimination legislation to the House floor, despite the passage of such bills in the Senate.

When Ryan got to the podium inside the House chamber, he hugged Boehner and appeared to say to an emotional Boehner, “Don’t cry”.
