A handful of other avenues exist for the Rules Committee to affect the convention and potentially open it up to a Trump alternative.

Also not on the speakers’ list: former Republicans presidents George H.W. or George W. Bush nor any of the former Republican presidential nominees. This is important because if delegates are not bound to primary results, then delegates, many of them not enthusiastic about Trump, could easily vote against him and possibly deny him the support of a majority of delegates. But after a Florida jury awarded Hogan $140.1 million in his case against Gawker, Trump signaled that such reform might not be necessary.

Besides letting the delegates vote freely, there could be other fights as well.

Less prominent than in the past will be the traditional pillars of major-party conventions: high-profile appearances by party leaders, elected officials, rising political stars and policy experts.

The stars of screen and song aren’t necessarily going to appear on the DNC main stage – ABC News only got a list of some 170 Democratic side events around Philadelphia during the convention.

Even so, word that Thiel had signed up to be a delegate for Trump in the recent California primary came as a surprise.

In another tactic, the dissidents also plan to challenge the roll calls of state delegations when the nominee is chosen later in the week. Ted Cruz, Eileen Collins, a pioneering woman astronaut, and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was thrust into the national spotlight following the Orlando terror attacks. Not on the initial list, and unlikely to appear at all, are Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Mike Ditka, and Mike Tyson, sports figures whom Trump had pledged would speak on his behalf apparently without checking with them first; all have declined openly or offered no public comment. “It can’t be nobody but Trump”, Williams said.
