‘Spectre’ Back on Top, Angelina Jolie’s ‘By the Sea’ Sinks
Absent meaningful competition from the weekend’s new releases, “Spectre” had no problem repeating as box office champion.

The James Bond picture Spectre is the No. 1 movie in North America for a second weekend, earning $35.4 million between Friday and Sunday, Rentrak announced.
The Peanuts Movie was able to avoid a 50% drop its second weekend making $24.2 million in second place. The ensemble comedy about a family gathering nabbed US$8.4 million from 2,603 locations.
Matt Damon’s flyaway hit “The Martian” dipped to fourth place with $6.7 million in its seventh weekend and a massive $207.4 million total, while Chilean mining drama “The 33” fared OK in its first week out, digging up $5.8 million for No. 5. The drama eked out US$5.8 million from 2,452 theaters – a poor showing and less than the US$8 million to US$10 million it was expected to generate.
Ticket sales saw a 49% decline from last weekend’s million opening, which itself was down 21% compared to the 2012 opening of “Skyfall”, but the film still finished a healthy margin ahead of second place finisher “The Peanuts Movie”, which earned $24.2 million, also in its second week. With an estimated $48 million, it’s also only about $11 million off what Skyfall made during its entire China run.
Despite its very limited release, Angelina Jolie’s By the Sea failed to make much of a dent. The budget was $250 million. Written and directed by Jolie – who stars opposite her husband, Brad Pitt, as a married couple going through a tough patch in their relationship – the film only took in an estimated $95,440 in 10 theaters (that’s 9,544 per screen), according to THR.
Goosebumps was down two spots #6 in its fifth weekend with $4.7 million.
The Ridley Scott directorial has been on screens for seven weeks now and has pooled in $477 million worldwide. Pictures shows, Antonio Banderas as Mario Sepulveda in Alcon Entertainment’s true-life drama “The 33”, a Warner Bros.
That places the film 21 percent ahead of the 171.5 million dollars grossed by last year’s “Interstellar” after 45 days of wide release and 14 percent behind the 240.4 million dollars 45-day gross of 2013’s “Gravity”.
