‘Spectre,’ ‘Peanuts’ Top New Films to Keep Hold on Box Office

“As anticipated the first week box office numbers see Spectre outperforming the last Bond film with an impressive and stable gross record”. Suffice to say, maybe a few predictions- like ours last week – that “Spectre” may underperform, might be sounding a little wacky at the moment.

The second weekend percentage hold for “Spectre” was stronger than both the second weekend percentage hold of 2012’s “Skyfall” and the second weekend hold of 2008’s “Quantum of Solace”. Its two-week total was $82.3 million. Falling to seventh, The Witness now has a cume of $33.71 million after adding a modest $2.46 million this week.

Ridley Scott’s The Martian continued to stay high up on the box office chart in its 7th outing after crossing the $200-M mark domestically Thursday.

Two major Hollywood titles, Ant-Man and The Peanuts Movie, dropped out of the top 10 this week, squeezed out by another local youthful rom-com, This Is Me, which took $1.52 million in its first three days.

SPECTRE dropped 52.2% in its second week of release, but still remained the top contender of the weekend.

Bridge of Spies and Goosebumps continue to make their way down the list after five weeks in release, while the Indian film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was a surprise entry at No. 8.

The film with the all-time biggest box office in the United Kingdom is believed to be Gone With The Wind, which is estimated by the BFI to have made more than £2 billion since its release in 1940.

Elsewhere, holds, holds, holds yet again. Angelina Jolie Pitt’s latest directorial endeavor By the Sea debuted on 10 screens and collected $95.4k.

Good performances help “Spectre”, with Ben Whishaw nerding-it-up as tech genius “Q” and Ralph Fiennes bringing the gravitas to Bond’s boss, “M”. The specialty field story this weekend belonged to Open Road’s “Spotlight”. The film has grossed a total of $207 million, domestically. That movie is, of course, The Martian, which grossed $6.71 million over the weekend.

The PG-rated football drama My All American failed to connect with moviegoers debuting outside the top ten with an estimated $1.4M from 1,565 locations for a puny $889 average for Clarius. “Steve Jobs” fell 50.6% in week six and Universal is already reducing its theater count. The $99 million picture isn’t off to a great start internationally, but that’s not to say that it won’t find success overseas.
