According to Eyewitness News, CEO of Sotheby’s International Realty Jason Rohde has been taken into custody.

Susan Rohde was found dead in a room at Spier, an exclusive wine estate and hotel in Stellenbosch, late last month.

It was agreed‚ said his lawyer Daniel Witz‚ that he would “voluntarily hand himself over” when they were ready to make an arrest.

Allegations of the couple being involved in an argument at the hotel’s bar on Saturday night, where Susan apparently “stood in public and said she knew he was having an affair” were irrelevant, Witz argued. “He is still in shock and can’t understand why they went back on the agreement”.

Rohde has alleged that his wife woke up in the morning to get ready and he went back to sleep. Sotheby’s had hosted its annual conference at the venue for the weekend. When he woke up later he claims that he was unable to open the bathroom door and immediately alerted hotel staff for assistance after which the grizzly discovery was made.

Spokesperson for the police Captain Frederick van Wyk said the initial suicide inquest was commuted to a murder investigation on 4 August after the postmortem.

Rohde is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Witz is trying to arrange that Rohde appear in court in Gauteng for bail purposes.
