Spieth ‘motivated’ to pay back Day at Tour Championship

US PGA Tour officials are under pressure to revisit the season long FedEx Cup playoff system after revelations Jason Day could lose the lucrative trophy to a winless competitor.

Day doesn’t hold a massive rankings lead over either Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth, however, and could easily relinquish his position if his rivals come to the party this week. Five players have won the Tour Championship in their first appearance. I just saw this amount of money and I was like, yes, I’m going to get this watch.

He’s not a terrific price at 7/2 with the Sportsbook (Industry best) or [4.8] on the exchange but that could soon look massive if he picks up from where he left off. The only negative that I can see is his driving.

The Californian won the PGA Tour’s flagship event, the Players Championship, and also tasted victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship earlier this month.

Spieth blasted onto the scene by winning the year’s first two majors – The Masters and U.S. Open. Well, he needs the win to clinch Player of the Year, and if he doesn’t, there’s always the pizza and beer that could sway a voter or two away from the resurgent Day. Find him on Facebook and Twitter.

Henrik Stenson reckons it should be a breeze to win this week’s PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship. McIlroy was the No. 1 seed in 2012 on the strength of winning two FedEx Cup playoff events, tied for 10th at East Lake and lost out to Brandt Snedeker. He and Colin Swatton, who’s been his mentor and coach since age 12 and doubles as his caddie now, set out a plan years ago to have Day reach No. 1 in the world by age 22.

Given his recent form past results are little indication of Day’s chances this week but with a T4 and T6 among his four appearances at East Lake there is no question he has a liking for the venue. It’s one of the few things he hasn’t accomplished on the course. If he can pull out a win this week at the TOUR Championship and win the FedEx Cup, then it would almost have to go to Day.

And they have been authoritative wins for Day.

“That’s the only time I ever checked was that Tuesday”, Snedeker said. But there’s more to it this year, and that’s their overall performance in majors.

Unfortunately for the other 24 players, they need to win the Tour Championship AND get some help from the field to take home the $10 million winner’s check. “I feel like I did yesterday, the same”.

“If I do win this, yeah, it may turn some heads, may turn some of my peers”, said the world No. 1.
