“Just a rusty round”, said Spieth, who skipped last week’s Greenbrier Classic.

“I’m going to have to do a little better than two-for-seven on up-and-downs in order to be able to play the weekend”.

Spieth is having a year for the ages after winning the first two major championships of the season and is hoping to use the John Deere as a springboard for success at the British Open which begins in one week.

“I’m here because I believe I can win this week”. Despite this, he remains the bookmaker’s favourite to take the Claret Jug next week following the withdrawal of injured world number one, Rory McIlroy. This week is playing out similarly to his first tournament after winning the Masters.

The Masters and U.S. Open champion will head into Saturday knowing he’s got a shot at another win before the British Open.

Spieth opened with 70 at Deere Run in 2013 and followed with three straight 65s en route to a playoff victory over Zach Johnson and David Hearn. He also tied for eighth in the Players Championship in May.

The 40-year-old Webb reeled off four birdies on her second nine holes and finished with her first score in the 60s in a U.S. Open since 2001, when the Australian won the tournament for the second straight year.

But the 21-year-old Texan maintains it is much ado about nothing and that he never contemplated deleting John Deere from his schedule, instead playing St. Andrews on a golf simulator to reacquaint himself with the Old Course.

“It doesn’t matter where it is”.

“I just played a couple of bad holes, and if it wasn’t for that I’m right there”. I didn’t think at the beginning of the year I would have a chance to get there this year and there certainly is an opportunity now.

“I’m getting on-course reps and it’s making a difference”, he said afterward.

It’s hard to go against Spieth in any competition.

But when he drives into TPC Deere Run in Silvis, there is a sense of renewed enthusiasm for the 48-year-old.

Television times are pretty standard fare: Thurs/Friday 4:00-7:00 pm ET on Golf Channel, Sat/Sun 1:00-2:30 pm ET on Golf Channel, and 3:00-6:00 pm ET on CBS.

Rebounding from missing the cut in five of his last six events, Olesen made seven birdies – including three in a row on Nos.

“He stuck with his commitment, which is very honorable”. He hit 13 of 18 greens in regulation and said he had to improve there “to play the weekend”. “I applaud him”, Johnson said.

Lee is the 10th highest ranked player in Illinois, after climbing to 78 on the world rankings with his win in West Virginia.

“That was kind of nice when it got there”, Guthrie said. I wasn t feeling good about my game.

The suspension means the 30-year-old Stallings is out for the rest of the season. You can play the first round with the wind from one direction requiring one type of approach shot, and the next day, the wind changes to the opposite direction and you have to shape your shots totally different.
