Spieth to partner Johnson and Matsuyama at St Andrews

“Well”, he said behind a smile. The shot selections I was working on last week and some of the trajectories I was envisioning on certain holes and certain winds and the ball chasing and what I need to do to make it move on the ground. I won’t lie, the fan in me believed the best chance for Spieth to win was for him to go to Scotland to prepare.

Jordan Spieth might not have seemed like the ideal candidate to be halfway to a sweep of the four professional majors. He’s going to end up in the Hall of Fame.

“It’s unbelievable, when you’re that young, you would say, one good night’s sleep to get over jet-lag and he’ll probably be fine tomorrow morning”, the Briton told reporters. Only five other players since the Masters began in 1934 have won the first two majors of the year.

Johnson’s extraordinary length will take a lot of those penal bunkers out of play. “The speed of the greens, to get used to those is a real thing”, said two-time U.S. Open champ Curtis odd, who’s also on the ESPN telecast.

And then there’s the unanswerable question of how he reacts.

Faldo, though, did have one golden nugget of information to pass on to the world number two as he prepared to tackle the famous links course on the east coast of Scotland. So it wasn’t too hard to get over it. I was a little disappointed I didn’t get the job done.

“He ticks all the boxes except that one, and the longer he has to wait for that, the more it detracts from what should be a tremendous career”, Nobilo added.

Peter Thomson (5), Greg Norman (2), Kel Nagle and Ian Baker Finch have each held the Claret Jug in their hands and while only two (Adam Scott and Jason Day) could be considered genuine prospects in 2015, it is worth assessing the prospects of the others whatever their benchmark of success is this week. In fact, of his eight tournaments played on US soil this year, he’s finished no better than a tie for 31st in the WGC-Cadillac Championship and has missed four cuts.

Asked how he deals with performing below his own expectations, Woods said he now spends more time with his family. “I had had enough”. “I have made that decision, I am comfortable with it, I am ready to go”.

He was in Dublin again this past weekend, playing Royal Dublin and Portmarnock, a now traditional part of his build-up to competing in the British Open, or as he put it, “I just hung out with the boys and played some golf”; and, for sure, he has the game for the Old Course.

McIlroy suffered a ruptured ankle ligament while playing football with friends last Saturday and told Woods about it the same day, although the world No 1 waited until Monday until he announced the news on Instagram. Casey, as mentioned, I’m already on at 100s, as I am Grace at 150 and big-hitting JB Holmes the same price. I think he’ll win another major championship. I think I showed that at the U.S. Open.

“Obviously, you can never use backspin to get the ball close at St Andrews or any links course”. For my take, check out my fantasy golf picks in the following slides to see who I like this week as the Open Championship makes its 29th trip to the Old Course.
