Spiked baseball bats found around San Francisco; police seek help

Late last week, over three days, the San Francisco Police Department responded to 34 reports of citizens finding baseball bats, many full of nails, chained to utility poles around the city, mostly near Fisherman’s Wharf.

The improvised weapons made of wood or metal have been left around city streets since Thursday, which was Thanksgiving in the USA.

San Francisco Police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said they have found 27 bats with spikes throughout them since it was first reported to them on Thursday.

Photos of one of the bats submitted to Hoodline show a wooden bat with large spikes drilled into it, making it resemble a medieval club called a morning star. Police are investigating various aspects of what Andraychak described as a “very strange” episode.

In addition to the Stonestown discovery reported yesterday, ABC7 reports that a bat turned up at Mission and Rolph in Crocker-Amazon, with a witness saying “It’s pretty freaky and it’s weird that there’s so many all over the city, but at least they’re not going around swinging at people”.

Police said the spiked bats could lead to charges of felony possession of a deadly weapon. No one seems to know exactly what (if anything) to make of it.
