Spotify and Pandora officially arrive on Amazon Echo

Previously, Echo users could have their device play music from Spotify or Pandora, but they needed to specify the streaming service – “Play The Beatles on Spotify”, for example. Once there, look for the new “Choose default music services” option, which is what you’ll use to change your default music library and default station service from Amazon Music to Spotify or Pandora. Otherwise, the Echo would try to find the song or artist via Amazon’s own Prime Music service if you just said “Play The Beatles”. And it’s not Amazon’s first push toward more Echo openness. This is likely beneficial to all users since Amazon Prime Music is probably the last option to stream music from.

One of the caveats is you need to be an Amazon Prime member and the items you order will have to be eligible for Prime.

This is part of a broader push to diversify Alexa’s offerings. It also isn’t apparent if they’re exclusive to Alexa device owners. Amazon recently put out some new developer tools that allow for third-party software providers to include Alexa in their apps, as well as a hardware development kit for alternative speakers to plug in Alexa within their products. This skill is still limited since the digital assistant won’t be able to place orders for everything on the platform but marks a significant milestone.

Amazon’s Prime Day is less than week away now, but the discounts have begun in the form of Countdown Deal. These are likely to increase further as over 10,000 developers have already signed up to design skills for Alexa.
