Music streaming giant Spotify has announced the launch of Release Radar, a weekly selection of the newest releases personalised for the listener. Each Friday, Release Radar drops customized just for you.

Relase Radar rolls out today globally. Discover Weekly has become a favourite part of many people’s Monday mornings, with over 40 million people having used the feature.

Release Radar is a two-hour algorithmically-personalised playlist that features newly-released songs from artists that the user already listens to.

The release of the new playlist comes at a time of unprecedented competition in the music streaming industry.

But will it give Spotify an edge over Apple Music?

Spotify, is banking on the debut of Release Radar, then, to help hold its own against its quickly-growing rival.

The successor to Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist is here. “We have an audio research team in NY that’s been experimenting with a lot of the newer deep learning techniques where we’re not looking at playlisting and collaborative filtering of users, but instead we’re looking at the actual audio itself”, Spotify’s engineering manager behind Release Radar, Edward Newett, told theVerge.

“We want to make it easier for you to tell us that you don’t like an artist that’s been featured”, Newett said.
