Spotify Hits 30 Million Paid Subscribers According To CEO Daniel Ek

The company’s chief executive, Daniel Ek, made the announcement on Twitter.

Spotify has clearly made a decision to not play the exclusive game with Apple and Tidal, and in the short term that means some of the hottest new music is either put on Spotify late or not at all.

30 million is an operational word for Spotify at the moment. “So cool to see Cuba opening up!” the 33-year-old Swedish entrepreneur tweeted.

Leading streaming service Spotify said Monday that it had reached 30 million paying subscribers, as the company hinted it would keep expanding to more countries. Industry watchers had long believed that Spotify was approaching the 30 million mark, but the company, which is privately held, does not release figures on a systematic basis. Spotify ran a $1-for-three-months promotion globally towards the end of a year ago, while its recent drive to promote its premium tier included a giveaway of Google Chrome.

It was a predictable milestone: back in January, we learned that Spotify boasted 28m subs, meaning it’s now adding paying customers at a rate of around 1m a month. A lot of the current users stayed on through their free trails and became paying subscribers. This is the first subscriber update Spotify has given out since it announced it had 20 million subscribers days before Apple Music hit the market last June, and shows the increased competition has had little to no effect on Spotify’s growth.
