Spotify now has a gaming section, including soundtracks and playlists

The midi beeps, orchestral scores and thrashing pop music that soundtracked games’ biggest moments stick with people for life. Now streaming music giant Spotify has wised up to this too, launching a new portal dedicated to video game soundtracks and playlists.

You can remember the Mass Effect 2 music hitting when Garrus arrives. In fact many gamers actually turn off the music in favor of their own.

In addition to the official tracks, Spotify Gaming also includes both community playlists, including one from our pals over at Engadget Gaming, as well as curated collections from Spotify itself.

For example, a Retrowave/Outrun playlist is full of remixed dance music using sounds from early games consoles and titles.

That’s the category of players that Spotify is catering to with its latest Gaming category addition.

Speaking about the new series, Tom Calderone, Global Head of Spotify Studios, Video & Content Development, said: “Creating content for fans by fans allows us to produce authentic narratives that resonate with our audience”. A lot of great music ends up locked up within games themselves, never to reach a broader audience, and the playlists with regular tracks are odd combinations of music you’d never normally see together, which can be pretty fun.
