But Starz, which had two nominations previous year, enjoyed a happy uptick to six, spread across its series “Flesh & Bone”, “Blunt Talk” and time-travel romance “Outlander”, which got three nominations, including best drama, best actress (Caitriona Balfe) and best supporting actor (Tobias Menzies).
Both “Narcos” and “Orange is the New Black” a comedy set in a women s prison scored two nominations each – for best drama series and comedy series, respectively, and one acting prize each.
The 2016 Golden Globe nominees were publicized Thursday via live-stream this morning by Chloe Grace Moretz, Dennis Quaid, America Ferrara and Angela Bassett, and included some surprises, as well as some stars getting passed over that had been expected to get a nomination.
Also nominated in the best television drama series are “Mr Robot“, “Narcos” and “Outlander”.
Timothy Gray, awards editor at industry magazine Variety, said the nominations reflected the cross-section of films in the running for this year’s prizes.
SNUB: Jacob Tremblay, “Room” Though “Room” made a strong showing for best actress (Brie Larson), script and picture, the Hollywood Foreign Press couldn’t find room in the best supporting actor category to recognize its scene-stealing 9-year-old star.
HBO, with seven nominations, took second place overall to Netflix, including its Emmy-winning series duo – White House comedy Veep and medieval fantasy Game of Thrones. I am incredibly grateful for their nomination, as well as the recognition they have given to this film and to Alejandro’s vision as its director.
Eddie Redmayne, best actor nominee for “The Danish Girl”: “Having the opportunity to help tell Lili and Gerda’s story has been a great privilege for me, and I am hugely grateful for the guidance, generosity and insight given to me by the transgender community”.
Broadcast networks were shut out altogether in the music or comedy series category, where they used to glow.
Along with Netflix, this year’s Golden Globe awards can be seen as a big opportunity for streaming services in general.
“Spotlight”, “Trumbo”, “Straight Outta Compton”, “The Big Short” and “Beasts of No Nation” landed nominations for best ensemble performance, SAG’s version of best picture. And it’s probably a good thing for the Globes, which loves to shock its audience by calling unexpected names onto the stage to tearfully accept their statues, mid-martini, giving this year’s host, Ricky Gervais, more to joke about. Interestingly, sci-fi film The Martian somehow managed to grab a nomination for Best Motion Picture, Comedy, and Best Actor In A Motion Picture, Comedy for Matt Damon – now that’s range. The film received nods for best screenplay for Tarantino and Ennio Morricone for his attractive score – the movie has a handsome overture – but the only actor recognized was Jennifer Jason Leigh for best supporting actress.
The nominees for best animated feature film: “Anomalisa, ” “Inside Out, ” “The Good Dinosaur, ” “The Peanuts Movie, ” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.
Thankfully, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated Lily Tomlin, age 76, for best actress, musical or comedy, for her ferociously amusing and poignant turn in “Grandma”, released earlier this year.
