Spotlight’ Oscar Win Puts Spotlight On Church Scandal Anew
The Vatican says that the movie, about child sex abuse in the Catholic Church, is not anti-Catholic.

The night that film buffs and moviegoers alike had been waiting for finally arrived Sunday, and the 2016 Oscars did not disappoint.
Despite some wonderful films up for nomination, the last award of the night, best picture, was given to Spotlight, a film about Boston Globe investigative reporters digging into a sexual abuse scandal involving Catholic priests.
The Spotlight win was sadly not the Oscars’ most viral moment, however-that honor went to Leonardo DiCaprio, who broke an Oscar record when he was mentioned in 440,000 tweets a minute after winning Best Actor for The Revenant.
“I thought it was jabbing at Hollywood, yet at the same time even-handed, and kind of dealing with a new era of how we discuss diversity”, said Adam McKay, director and co-writer of best picture nominee “The Big Short”.
“It’s rare to make a film that impacts the world as significantly as this one has”, “Spotlight” producer Michael Sugar said on stage.
Other winners of the night included Inside Out (animated feature), Amy (documentary feature), and 87-year-old composer Ennio Morricone (best score for The Hateful Eight).
In accepting the best original screenplay Oscar for “Spotlight”, McCarthy said, “We made this for all the journalists who have and continue to hold the powerful accountable and for the survivors, whose courage and will to overcome is really an inspiration to us all“. Its star, Brie Larson, won the award for best actress; it also won the award for best first screenplay.
It wasn’t all doom and Gloom for Mad Max Fury Road as it picked up Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. “He features in the film “Spotlight”,” which was nominated in six categories and won Best Picture. And while the Oscars have been beset by criticism for a second straight year of all-white acting nominees, the Spirits boasted five nonwhite nominees out of 20 – and three of them won.
Gasps went around the Dolby when Mark Rylance won best supporting actor for Steven Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies” over Sylvester Stallone.
The talent is there for more diversity in the movies, but instead of force-feeding diversity, Hollywood needs to grow both talent and opportunity.
Rock called the Oscars, “The White People’s Choice Awards”. “For something like this where I needed a little bit more money, I needed this cast”, he said.
A critically acclaimed film like Spotlight, which had already won several honours before its Oscar victory, can produce returns for its investors.
