Spotlight shines at Critics’ Choice Awards

The pinnacle of the star-studded black-tie ceremony, hosted by comedian Robin Ince, was George Miller’s high-octane action extravaganza Mad Max: Fury Road that raced ahead of the competition, taking the awards for Film of the Year and Director of the Year. Many movies, television series, actors and actresses received awards, whereas in other award shows, they barely got any recognition.

After Golden Globe wins last week, and then pipping Mad Max: Fury Road with 12 Oscar nominations, The Revenant and the film’s director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu were frontrunners for the directing and best picture Oscars.

Another night of Hollywood movie awards, another night of no awards for “Carol”. The investigative journalism drama Spotlight, about the newspaper team that uncovered a widespread child sex scandal in the Catholic Church in Boston, won the awards for best picture and best acting ensemble.

The lack of diversity this awards season came into focus on Thursday when there were once again no actors of color among the Academy Awards nominees.

Also starring Brie Larson, who has been nominated for an Oscar for her performance, Room is out in cinemas in the United Kingdom now.

Amy Schumer used part of her time on stage to rally for better gun control laws in the US.

Rachel Bloom took home the Best Actress in a Comedy Series award for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”. “That’s what you want everybody to say when a naked photo of you goes viral, you want them to say: ‘What a courageous photo.’ Like wow, thanks”.

Alicia Vikander won best supporting actress for the “The Danish Girl” and Sylvester Stallone knocked out the competition when he won the best supporting actor award for “Creed”. “Thank you so much”, said the film’s producer Steve Golin, picking up the award. “Master of None” got it for Best Comedy series.

Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie: “Ex Machina”.

Jeffrey Tambor cemented the status he’s achieved by portraying Maura Pfefferman, otherwise known as Moppa on “Transparent”, adding yet another trophy to his mantel and more awards cred for Amazon originals.
