Rylance devoted a healthy chunk of his speech to praising director Steven Spielberg.
And cheers for Alicia Vikander in the “The Danish Girl”.
The Academy voters this year made a decision to scatter their love by awarding different films though George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” swept in technical categories with six wins in editing, production design, sound editing, sound mixing, costume and makeup & hairstyle. Lady Gaga performed her song “Til It Happens To You” joined onstage by dozens of sexual assault survivors. And he, along with the film’s stars – Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams – traveled the circuit with the original Boston Globe team in tow.
Original Score: “The Hateful Eight”. The film also earned Mexican cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki his third consecutive win.
Rock certainly had people talking with his opening monologue taking a hit right at the Academy in light of the second year of #OscarsSoWhite, but apparently that was not enough to revive the show from its drab character. “It’s a great thing, it’s a really incredibly recognized”, he said.
“And I’m pedaling behind her thinking this is all great and she got to a fork and she said, “You go that way” and she disappeared into the night”.
It was the first Oscar for Sweden’s Vikander (27) who had a breakout year in 2015 with starring roles in six films, including “Ex Machina”, and “Testament of Youth”. He quipped that this year’s in-memoriam package is “just going to be black people that were shot by the cops on their way to the movies”.
The routine was followed with a video bit in which black actors took roles in films that had been nominated for Oscars, including Whoopi Goldberg in “Joy” and Rock in “The Martian”, as well as a freaky appearance by actress Stacey Dash, who had called for the elimination of Black History Month.
“My answer to them was, we can’t not afford to have Bob Hohler not do what he does”, Sullivan said.
According to Nielson, their preliminary numbers have the 88th annual Academy Awards at a 23.1 household rating among major markets, a 37 share, which is a slight dip from past year.
Some celebrities were attending an event in Flint, Michigan, #JusticeForFlint. Several top African American filmmakers, Ryan Coogler (“Creed”) and Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) spent the evening not at the Oscars but in Flint, Mich., raising money for the water-contaminated city. For example, a running joke in which he solicited money from wealthy audience members to fuel his daughters’ Girl Scout cookie sales felt flat and forced. In a taped section, Rock visited the Los Angeles neighborhood of Compton – the heart of the hip-hop music industry – to ask residents if they had heard or seen the Oscar-nominated movies.
But the awards were the dominant story.

Walter Robinson, who led the Globe Spotlight Team that broke open the scandal in 2002, said he believes the film had already had a huge impact – on victims and the church itself – well before it received Oscar awards Sunday for best picture and best screenplay. The newspaper’s front page featured an image celebrating the actors who took home the Oscar, and an inside page was dominated by a house ad thanking the actors and reporters who worked together to tell the story of the investigation.
