In the Houston ninth, Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa greeted Carinals closer Trevor Rosenthal with back-to-back hits.

Garcia permitted four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings, with former minor-league roommate Colby Rasmus delivering a tie-breaking homer to start the fifth.

Fister (7-3) allowed 2 runs and 5 hits in 71/3 innings, his longest outing of the season, to win his sixth consecutive decision. Springer had been in a 4-for-37 slump before connecting to straightaway center off Kevin Siegrist (4-2) with two outs for his 15th homer. In the AL West, the Houston Astros remain four games behind second place Seattle Mariners and nine games behind the American League’s best Texas Rangers.

“There was a lot of them that I was not familiar with and in fact knew absolutely nothing about until watching film”, Wainwright said of Houston’s lineup. “I just wanted to come out and be myself and enjoy the moment, not get too caught up in this or that”. Carlos Correa returned to the line-up as the clean-up hitter for the Houston Astros after three games off, going 0-for-4 and striking out twice.

Yadier Molina started the two-out rally in the seventh with a single, one of his three hits, and barely beat Springer’s relay home from right. Tip your hat. Things happen”, said Garcia, who called Rasmus “a good friend.

“Everybody needs encouragement, I don’t care who you are”, Matheny said.

“He’s a good friend and had a good game”, Garcia said of Rasmus. You know, he went down with the right perspective, the right attitude to go get better. He’s done a great job, but it comes down to what we have here, how’s everybody going, how’s that play, what’s the opportunity for a guy to help us out here. You have to look in the middle of the plate and be on time. “I haven’t seen him personally, but everything I hear has been positive”. As of Tuesday evening, plenty of tickets were still available (directly through the Cardinals’ website) for the Astros-Cardinals game for fans who want to watch the Cards vs. Astros live in St. Louis.

“I was trying to let the ball get there and I took a really good swing”.
