Sprint Takes on T-Mobile With New Unlimited Data Plan [Chart]

The plan starts at $70 per month for one phone line. But this isn’t quite the bottomless bucket of mobile connectivity it sounds like. The second line on the plan will cost $50, and each additional line will cost $20 for up to eight lines. It’s an additional $25 per month, which might be a problem for people who like to stream on their phones.

Unlimited isn’t really unlimited, though. It’s unlimited with caveats.

People will no longer need to hold back on using data on smartphones, but those who haven’t been using that much data could wind up paying more for unlimited data they don’t need.

Tablets: Add a tablet to your T-Mobile One plan for $20 per month per tablet.

One of the most famous quotes by the legendary Ford Motor founder was on the availability of the Model T in only one color: “Any customer can have a auto painted any color that he wants so long as it is black”.

For starters, HD streaming doesn’t come with the bundle. The worst part is that this will likely be the new normal for some carriers. According to Sprint’s newest announcement, the company’s new “Unlimited Freedom” plan provides unlimited text, voice and data for $60 a month for one line, $40 a month for a second line, and $30 a month for every line thereafter (up to a maxiumum of 10). But the Simple Choice plan was undoubtedly a better deal. Thanks to month-to-month roll-over data, it was already somewhat hard to hit your data cap on Simple Choice plans. You could also tether at respectable speeds, and switch video throttling on and off whenever you want.

T-Mobile, staying true to its aggressive marketing tack, is calling this move a “double-down” on unlimited – an “all-in” for the network.

You can find out more info about the new T-Mobile’s new plan, including a price breakdown for multiple lines, on the carrier’s website. Video is unlimited but at standard definition, which is the pace of data usage under T-Mobile’s Binge On feature.

Existing customers can keep their plans for now.

Called T-Mobile ONE, the new setup announced by CEO John Legere offers customers a way to get rid of pesky data plans – with unlimited talk, text and 4G LTE smartphone data, all for the impressively low cost of $40 per line if you’re a family of (at least) four.
