Sprint tries to counter Mobile Without Borders with its Open World offer

While global calls and text to Canada and Mexico will be free, calls and text start at 5 cents per minute to Latin America and the rest of the countries Spint supports for worldwide calls.

Sprint just rolled out a new free add-on for its plan, with free calls, texts and 1 GB of data for U.S. customers traveling to Canada, Mexico and select Latin American countries.

Countries under the Sprint Open World plan include the Dominican Republic, Panama, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

“We’re opening up the world and breaking down borders so more Sprint customers can stay in touch with the people who are important to them”, said Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure in a press release.

Sprint’s offer is part of a broader push across the wireless industry to invest in Mexico. And while in Mexico, those customers have unlimited calling to the US and inside Mexico, as well as unlimited texting and data usage. All in all, it’s an extra perk that gives customers even more bang for their buck. Part of this strategy includes addressing the high cost of using a mobile phone when traveling outside of a US carrier’s coverage area – called roaming.

Still, carriers are not going to entirely eliminate costs.

Finally, Sprint Open World offers free texting, $0.20 per minute calls, and $30 per GB data in Australia, Canary Islands (Spain), Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Palestinian Territories, Russia, San Marino (Italy), Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Vatican City, and Wales.

Sprint’s Open World is available now. Sprint will soon add Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela to its list of Open World participating countries.

Sprint is opening the world to its customers to make it cheaper to make calls and access data. Sprint
