Sprinter Dharambir Singh fails dope test

Barely a day after shot-putter Inderjeet Singh’s “B” sample returned positive, Rio Olympics bound 200m sprint runner Dharambir Singh has also failed his dope test, according to a report by NDTV. “NADA normally informs about dope positive cases”, a source told PTI.

Singh was told not to board the flight to Rio after the positive dope test, say media reports.

However, neither NADA nor the Athletics Federation of India confirmed whether the athlete had flunked a dope test.

Shot putter Inderjeet Singh’s confirmatory B sample also returned positive for banned substances, virtually ending his hopes to compete in the Rio Olympics.

Sources said that Inderjeet had requested for the B sample test on Thursday and the result came on Tuseday.

He was earlier stripped of his gold medal won in 100m race during the National Inter-State Championships in 2012 for evading a mandatory dope test and a lengthy ban may bring an end to his career.

The reigning Asian champions now face the prospect of being banned for four years under the new WADA Code.

The 27-year-old Haryana-born athlete became the first male sprinter in 36 years to qualify for the 200-metres individual event when he clocked an impressive 20.45 seconds at the Indian Grand Prix in Bengaluru in July, which was a comfortable 0.05 seconds below the Rio mark of 20.50s. He is one of those athletes who doesn’t train at the national camps, but prefers to do it alone along with his personal coach.
