But instead Spurrier wanted to deliver a message to South Carolina fans: he’s not planning on leaving any time soon.

Steve Spurrier has made headlines several times – including last week at SEC media days – by discussing his zero-tolerance policy on domestic violence. “We haven’t had anything happen [with domestic violence] in about eight years now, so I think it’s a good rule and if you enforce it it’s really helpful”.

So, when coaches Steve Spurrier and Kevin Sumlin crossed paths while doing interviews with ESPN in Bristol, Conn., on Tuesday, Spurrier decided to issue a friendly wager.

On some real levels, it’s refreshing to know where he stands as a coach and a human being when it comes to important topics such as these in a game that involves young men developing into our society’s future. Spurrier said he was particularly perturbed that the article then got picked up and distributed locally in Columbia.

“I’m a big believer in Attila the Hun’s book, he said it very simply, ‘it’s a simple truth that the greater your accomplishments, your victories, the greater opposition, torment discouragement your enemies will throw in your path. Expect it and don’t become a victim of it. Expect it. So I’m telling our fans expect those people who are our enemies to talk bad about us”. “Last year at this time I was 69, we were 11-2 and there was no question about my age. I want our Gamecock fans: Don’t believe what our enemies say about us”.

He said the school’s doctor said he had the physical and mental faculties of a 55-year-old.

With it being a last-minute press conference, some people speculated that Spurrier was announcing his retirement or that he was stepping down.

Spurrier says he plans on coaching “a long time”.

Then this past week, Spurrier stated that while he wants to continue coaching into his 70’s. Don’t listen to them and you’ll be fine, and they’ll try to tell you they’re not their enemies too.

The Gamecocks finished 12th in the SEC in scoring defense last season, with opponents scoring over 30 points per game.

But Spurrier didn’t just address those who thought he didn’t have it anymore. We let that guy write in our paper the other day. They say we can’t beat him him ever. So we are looking forward to that challenge also.
