Spurs waive former BYU star Jimmer Fredette, 3 others

Fredette was waived by the Spurs on Wednesday, Shams Charania of Yahoo! Fredette featured for the New Orleans Pelicans last season. He still has a chance to land elsewhere in the league before the new season begins, but his four-year track record doesn’t bode well for future success.

This move by the Spurs comes as a shock to everyone, especially Fredette.

That said, he’s played less than 14 minutes per game across 229 appearances, and when you combine that with the fact that he couldn’t make it work with the Spurs, it doesn’t bode well for his future in the National Basketball Association.

It is also being reported that the Spurs will cut Deshaun Thomas, a former second round pick and Youssou Ndoye, an undrafted free agent.

Considering they guaranteed 7,711 of his salary – a pretty whopping sum for just a training-camp player – this might be more surprising.

Fredette was formerly a number 10 overall pick for the Sacramento Kings, but he never could get things going with the team. Now the Spurs management has made a decision to waive Jimmer Fredette. The point guard experiment would worsen in his sophomore year, as Fredette was such a defensive liability (21.1 PER against) that they couldn’t keep him on the floor. Fredette is the biggest surprise here though as he was given guaranteed money in the contract he signed with the Spurs this offseason.

HoopsRumors.com reports that the Suns have 15 players, two with non-guaranteed deals, while the Hawks have 13 full guaranteed players and one player that is likely a “lock” to make the roster, leaving one spot open.

Four teams (Boston, Denver, Philadelphia, and Charlotte) averaged worse than 33 percent from three last season and all are in the middle of a rebuilding process, potentially serving as the next opportunity for Fredette.
