That was the trajectory for “Batman v Superman”, which bowed with $166 million in March but didn’t make that much in its entire remaining run in North American theaters.
The film topped the United States box office on its opening weekend, generating $135.1 million, according to comScore.
Starring Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie as a band of deadly criminals recruited to execute risky black-ops missions, the film has an average critical score of 4.7 out of 10 on the reviews aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. In recent years, Marvel and DC Universe films have done well at the box office, and expectations were that the $175 million, David Ayer-directed villain collaboration would be no different.
“I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene that it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity, because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie”, said Leto. What’s more, Suicide Squad marks the highest opening ever for a Will Smith movie. While most films enjoy a second weekend drop that’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 50%, DC’s superhero battle royale fell around 69% between weekends. The coming weeks will show if crowds still materialize or quickly dissipate as they did for “Batman v Superman”.

“Bad Moms” hung in at third place for earning an estimated $14.2 million in it’s sophomore week.
