The new Tomb Raider movie has been generating conversation recently for entirely the wrong reasons – mostly because someone doesn’t have the imagination to see beyond comedy pointy breasts – but it seems we’re all about to talk about it for much more pleasing reasons. In addition to the potential name of the upcoming Tomb Raider game, images of Mesoamerican step pyramids were spotted on a marketing firm’s website.

According to Rich Briggs, the Brand Director for Crystal Dynamics, the company behind the Tomb Raider games, there’s a good reason for the wealth disparity between the two films.

Tomb Raider (2013) reboots the action-adventure franchise and revisions the origins of Lara Croft as a young and inexperienced archaeologist and adventurer. Then comes the obligatory segment where Lara gets the shit kicked out of her as she goes violently tumbling down a steep slope. While details are slim, it looks like Lara Croft will be moving from the cold of the Himalayan Mountains, to the tropical Mayan Temples. When you have a heroine facing off against a machine gun-toting henchman with nothing but a bow and arrow and there’s no doubt the heroine will prevail, it takes a lot of the suspense out of it.

Another thing worth mentioning is that, unlike the last game, the very smart decision has been made to not make this latest entry a timed exclusive. But the way Vikander stays true to the character keeps all the action grounded and engaging.

Lara Croft is a fictional character who first came to life in video games in 1996.

But being the epicentre of the action was hugely appealing for Vikander, who – since winning Best Supporting Actress at the 2016 Oscars for her role in The Danish Girl – has become one of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood.
