Fernando has played 40 Tests, 141 ODIs and 17 T20 internationals for the island nation. Many a first choice player has missed out due to injuries, namely Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath and Nuwan Pradeep.
After captaining the side in the limited-overs matches in New Zealand, Dinesh Chandimal will continue as captain.
The T20I series between India and Sri Lanka will get underway on the 9th February in Pune while the second and third games will be played on 12th and 14th in Delhi and Visakhapatnam respectively.
Sri Lanka has named its 15-man squad for their tour of India next month, where they will be playing a three-match T20I series. Test and ODI captain Mathews is nursing a groin strain that largely prevented him from bowling in New Zealand. It is learnt that the squad that is picked for the Asia Cup in Bangladesh – a T20 tournament in its new version – will virtually be the same one as that which will defend Sri Lanka’s World T20 title.
