On Wednesday it was announced that captain Smith would head home midway through the one-day worldwide series, which has three matches still to play, with two Twenty20 clashes to come thereafter.
Vice-captain David Warner will lead the side for the remaining three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches against Sri Lanka.
He played 87 Tests and scored 5,492 runs at 40.98, and also picked 39 Test wickets.
The move to send Smith home mid-way through the ODI series in Sri Lanka has been criticised by a number of former players.
Australia’s James Faulkner recorded his first hat-trick in one-day internationals but Sri Lanka still managed to post a challenging 288 in their second match in Colombo on Wednesday.
Following Dilshan’s dismissal, the Sri Lankan middle order gave way, with skipper Angelo Matthews, and Dhananjaya de Silva being dismissed for 2 and 12 respectively.
Dilshan missed Sri Lanka’s previous limited-overs series against England due to personal reasons, but returned to the side for the ongoing clash against Australia.
“I together with my committee wish to extent our honest appreciation and wish him the very best in his future endeavors”, President of Sri Lanka Cricket Thilanga Sumathipala said. “So that’s another opportunity and that’s important for us to get him that experience”.
Sri Lanka’s last link with their golden generation of cricketers, all-rounder Tillakaratne Dilshan, has announced his plans to hang up his boots from global cricket after the end of their limited overs series against Australia.
His best score came in the 2015 International Cricket Council World Cup, when he scored 161 not out against Bangladesh.
Known for his famous “Dilscoop” ramp shot, Dilshan has accumulated a staggering 10,248 runs in the 50-overs format and taken 106 wickets in 329 matches. The swashbuckling batsman had retired from Test cricket in 2013.
