Sridevi funeral: Sonam Kapoor loses her cool and bursts into tears

A Dubai post-mortem report said the Bollywood superstar, known simply as Sridevi, died of accidental drowning in a hotel bath. Sridevi Ji’s body will arrive tonight and her last rites will be performed on Wednesday afternoon, says politician Amar Singh.

In a statement, Sridevi’s family said people could pay their last respects between 9:30am to 12:30pm at the Celebration Sports Club in Mumbai.

Heavy security was in force along the streets to control the crowds, which included people who had travelled hundreds of kilometres to be there.

The body of Sridevi was flown back to Mumbai from Dubai late on Tuesday night by a chartered aircraft provided by a company belonging to Anil Ambani.

Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Sridevi started acting at the age of four, with a role in the Tamil-language film, Thunaivan.

Sridevi starred in about 300 films in her career, starting out as a child actor in south India, and making her debut in Bollywood in 1978, where she soon made her mark.

Sridevi returned to films in 2012 with “English Vinglish“, where she played a quiet housewife who remains largely in the background until she decides to learn English to fit in with her family.

She became a national icon with a string of blockbuster films including Mawali (Scoundrel) and Tohfa (Gift). “I saw to it that she was the most comfortable on sets, she got all what she wanted and even more”, he said.

Sridevi’s daughters Jhanvi, 20, and Khushi, 17 are in Mumbai, where the film fraternity has been pouring in since Sunday at the home of actor Anil Kapoor, Sridevi’s brother-in-law to pay their respects.
