Patrons at an Art Basel event in Miami obliviously watched a woman being stabbed on her arms and neck Friday night, thinking it was performance art.
According to an arrest report, alleged attacker Siyuan Zhao spontaneously stated to police, as they were patting her down: “I had to kill her and two more…” She eventually flagged down help and was wheeled away by paramedics to Jackson Memorial Hospital. “I never would have thought there would be a stabbing at Art Basel”.
Zhao faces a charge for attempted murder and is being held on $7,500 bond. “It wasn’t fast. It was pretty chill”, bystander Sylvia Rodriguez told the Miami Herald.
An Art Basel spokesperson said that victim’s injuries were not life threatening and the suspect was apprehended by police at the scene within seconds of the incident.
Police didn’t release the name of the suspect or the officer involved in the shooting.
While Art Basel organizers had beefed up security in lieu of the Paris attacks, security at the front door of the convention center may have been subpar.
