Disability Issues Minister Nicky Wagner will be attending the Paralympics in Rio from 6 to 10 September.

The final of the men’s 100m T13 takes place on Friday morning, where Smyth will be hoping to achieve a memorable third consecutive 100m Paralympic title.

And with canoe-kayak and triathlon taking the number of sports up to 22, Rio will be looking to produce new sporting heroes now that London 2012 sprint star Oscar Pistorius is in a South African prison for the killing of his girlfriend.

A month after 2016 Olympics were held in Rio, the Paralympic Games will kick off Wednesday in the Brazilian city.

Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC) President Vladimir Lukin said last week that they had written to the IPC in order to find out how they get their membership reinstated, which would allow them to return to global competitions.

Instead of featuring stories on Rio 2016, they will present coverage of “Russian Paralympic champions from various years and their personal stories of triumph”.

“Gold medallists of #Paralympic Games are entitled to Rs 75 Lacs, Silver Rs 50 Lacs & Bronze Rs 30 Lacs as cash award from MYAS”, the Ministry tweeted from its official handle.

Henry Nzungi (T12 – partially blind), a gold medallist in 400m at the All African Games in Congo past year and world champion in Dubai in March, is a medal prospect and will thus be under pressure when he takes on the track. “It wasn’t athletes that were cheating the system, it was the state-sponsored doping system that was cheating the Russian athletes”, Craven said on Friday. Nichols also won gold in both downhill and giant slalom skiing at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada. Canada’s goal is a top 16 finish in overall medals. This only makes the other two favourites from the games – United Kingdom and China all the more stronger.
