Stan Kroenke: STL Aldermen agree to finance new stadium

The proposal was made to St. Louis aldermen and other city officials Tuesday, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported. A vote isn’t expected until Friday. Owners of the Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders all have proposed relocation, perhaps as early as next season.

For the Chargers and Raiders, it’s more evidence for moving two teams, as the league wants to do and it might swing enough votes to get approval for the teams to move to Carson. The plan approved Friday assumes $300 million in stadium funding help from the league, but commissioner Roger Goodell said in a letter this week to Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon that NFL policy caps its contribution at $200 million. But members of the St. Louis stadium task force have said that even if the Rams move, a new stadium along the Mississippi River north of the Gateway Arch could lure another team. The game could be the final home contest for the St. Louis Rams if owner Stan Kroenke is allowed to move the team to Los Angeles next season.

In what could be the last home game that the Rams ever play at the Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis is now a 2.5-point favorite versus the Buccaneers after the game opened as a pick’em.

However, Goodell responded saying the newest plan is “fundamentally inconsistent with the NFL’s program of stadium financing”. The chances that he would again be someone’s tenant – as he is now in St. Louis – seem slim unless he gets a sweetheart of a deal that ensures him huge profits. We recognize that our proposal will require extensive review before it is considered for approval by the NFL. But with the National Football League setting its deadline of the end of the month for cities to put up stadium plans or shut up, apparently everyone has decided that insane is the way to go.

As the Chargers prepare for what may be their last game at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday, St. Louis has taken a major step forward to keep the Rams in St. Louis.

In the task force’s proposal, part of the funding for the new stadium would come from $250 million from the team’s owner.
