Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman Addresses UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva

The DC Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals decided on September 17 that construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline would be temporarily stopped within 20 miles of Lake Oahe in North Dakota while the court considers whether to order a longer delay.

The decision by the Army Corps to route the pipeline less than a mile upstream of the Standing Rock Reservation is a defilement of treaty law, specifically the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe said the pipeline threatens sacred tribal lands and the water supply for residents in the region.

According to a recent CNN report, the project developer, Dakota Access, says the pipeline would help the United States become less dependent on importing energy from unstable regions of the world.

The Dakota Access Pipeline has been sparking national conversation.

Numerous same environmentalist groups that opposed the Keystone XL pipeline have joined the fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAP), which would bring 470,000 barrels of Bakken crude oil per day from western North Dakota to southern IL. The US$3.8 billion, 1172 mile project would carry almost 500 000 bpd of crude oil from North Dakota’s oil fields, through South Dakota and Iowa, to an existing pipeline in Patoka, Illinois, where shippers can access Midwest and Gulf Coast markets.

Archambault said a child was bitten and injured by a guard dog.

Kirchmeier said the investigation will determine which firms were hired to provide security that day and whether they were licensed.

The task force includes members of the Morton and Mercer County sheriff’s departments, the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The pipeline goes through the Dakotas and Iowa to IL.

“Our nation is working to protect our waters and our sacred places for the benefit of our children not yet born”.

“We ask that you call upon all parties to stop the construction of Dakota Access Pipeline and to protect the environment, our nation’s future, our culture and our way of life”, he said.
