Stanford rallies for late win on end-zone fade at UCLA

Stanford is ranked number seven in the nation with a 2-0 record for the season and is coming off a win over USC by a 27-10 final score.

After the game, Shaw was asked about UCLA during his interview with ABC/ESPN and was complimentary of Mora.

On a more personal note, Mora is 0-6 against the Cardinal, the coach who loves to keep as much as possible secret about his team probably wishing he could prevent the disclosure of that particular statistic. “It doesn’t matter who you lose to, when you lose, it stings”. And just like six years ago in Autzen, the play resulted in a fumble that the opposing team recovered while the receiver lay motionless on the field.

Stanford quarterback Ryan Burns runs past UCLA defensive lineman Boss Tagaloa during the first half of an NCAA college football game in Pasadena, Calif., Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016. “If it wasn’t for that, I’d be satisfied”. McCaffrey converted a third down with 29 seconds on the clock, and on the next play, Burns found Arcega-Whiteside for the go-ahead score.

“Everybody that we put in there stepped up and played well”, Shaw went on to say. “But personally, in our hearts and souls, it means a lot and that’s more tough to take”.

“We didn’t have the best first half, especially up front”, defensive end Solomon Thomas said.

The Bruins will have to rebound for Saturday’s game against Arizona at the Rose Bowl to establish a stable foundation in the Pac-12 South. UCLA then faces Arizona State in Tempe on October 8. This had been a chance to see the Cardinal’s star running back Christian McCaffrey in action. This time, UCLA’s improved defense did a solid job on him – holding McCaffrey to only 138 rushing yards and 13 receiving yards is a win.

The Cardinal, with just minutes remaining, methodically moved down the field.

UCLA won the turnover battle 2-1 with Kenny Young grabbing an interception in the 1st half that lead to UCLA’s only touchdown.

Young returned a first-quarter interception 40 yards to the Stanford 26-yard line.

The 8-yard touchdown reception was Arcega-Whiteside’s third career catch and gave Stanford its first lead of the game.

Iese finished with five receptions for 89 yards, doubling his yardage total for the season’s first three games. His longest kick return covered 14 yards, UCLA’s JJ Molson repeatedly neutralizing Stanford’s biggest weapon with kickoffs that resembled infield flies. Ukropina’s last field goal cut the lead to 10-9 with 10:55 left in the fourth quarter.

The final was 22-13 despite the Bruins controlling McCaffrey, leading for almost three quarters and pummeling the Cardinal with a defense that permitted only 77 passing yards until the last drive.

But, despite several times taking advantage of UCLA tight ends on Stanford linebackers, Rosen and the Bruins offense couldn’t put the game away.
