Stanford steamrolls Iowa 45-16 in Rose Bowl before 94000 fans
McCaffrey continued to prove the importance of an all-purpose running back to an offensive attack an set a Rose Bowl record with 358 all-purpose yards and becoming the first player in the game to rush for more than 100 yards and gain more than 100 receiving.

The game was essentially a nightmarish outcome for an Iowa team that went 12-0 and was on the cusp of a spot in the College Football Playoff before losing to Michigan State in the Big Ten title game. McCaffrey played an equally pivotal role in the Cardinal’s next series when he gained all but one of Stanford’s 65 yards on a drive that moved the ball from the Cardinal 26-yard line to the Iowa 8.
Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey led Stanford to a 45-16 victory over Iowa on Friday.
Christian McCaffrey added a punt return for a touchdown to his expanding resume, not that he needed to show anything more than he has during a remarkable, record-setting season.
Best stat: 207, yards rushing for Stanford, which averaged 6.3 ypc.
Billed as a battle of similar, physical styles between the Pac-12 champion and the runner-up from the Big Ten, this 102nd edition of the Granddaddy of Them All quickly spiraled into an epic mismatch.
The Iowa offense posted an ugly goose egg in the first half and went into the break down 35-0.
“Just like this game won’t define this team, one play doesn’t define a game”, Ferentz said.
Iowa literally never found footing, continually slipping at inopportune times on the Rose Bowl natural turf.
His performance in the Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual got off to an auspicious start.
“He’s a tremendous football player”, marveled Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.
Cardinal quarterback Kevin Hogan is six of 11 for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Scoring has been been that quick and easy for the Cardinal. (The game was also another example of Iowa’s continuing struggles in bowl games, but that’s a topic worthy of further breakdown in another post.) Honestly, I don’t know how this loss impacts the rest of Iowa’s season – that might be something that requires a little more time to sink in.
What the loss means for Iowa: It was a good year for the Hawkeyes – a very good year, in fact, with a school-record victory total. “Once we locked in on them, our guys just made those great plays throughout the game”.

Junior QB C.J. Beathard finished the game with 239 yards passing and two touchdowns. Matt VandeBerg caught a 36-yarder, and Akrum Wadley scored on a 31-yarder with 2:46 remaining. First, there was the team’s infamous marching band, which put on a performance that seemed to actively troll Iowa by playing the jingle from a Farmers Only commercial while a few people ran onto the field in a cow costume.
