Turner, who came to Stanford from OH, was arrested moments after the sex crime when two graduate students riding bikes on Lomita Court around 1 a.m. found him, then a 19-year-old freshman, on top of a partially clothed woman.

Turner’s case exploded on social media and ignited a debate about campus rape and the criminal justice system after the victim’s 7,200-word letter to Turner that she read in the courtroom during sentencing was published online.

The case led California lawmakers to pass legislation to expand the definition of rape, and has set off an effort to recall the judge who handed down the sentence. “It’s absolutely horrifying that, despite overwhelming evidence, Judge Persky let him go free with really a slap on the wrist, and the woman will live with that for the rest of her life”.

Persky also gave “lenient treatment” to other defendants accused of inflicting violence against women that showed he had a pattern of bias, Dauber said.

He was charged with sexual assault instead of rape because although he digitally penetrated the woman, he did not have intercourse with her, and California law does not define that as rape.

She said he was held in “protective custody” during his incarceration, but her department did not receive any credible threats. Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown has not said whether he would sign it.

The January 2015 assault was stopped by two men on bicycles who noticed that Turner’s victim wasn’t moving, authorities said.

In her statement, the woman described how the attack left her emotionally scarred. They chased and tackled, holding him down until police arrived on the scene. Turner was released from the jail earlier Friday after serving half of his six month sentence. Heiskala, 41, says her daughter is a high school senior planning on attending college next year.

“I completely understand caring about the judge more than him”, said protester Daniel Hardin, of Vandalia, with an M4 assault rifle around his shoulder. “That’s why I’m here”. Jim Beall, D-San Jose, and U.S. Reps.

Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen, whose office had recommended Turner serve six years in state prison, authored Assembly Bill 2888, which would prohibit probation in cases like Turner’s.

Eight days before Turners release, the court announced Persky would be reassigned from the criminal to the civil division, reportedly at his own request. Others carried signs with defamatory messages.

“We’re very focused on the judge”, she said.

Just as in California, Texas offenders can get up to half their sentence dropped due to good behavior.

He must complete a sex-offender counseling class for one to three years. He will have to report to a probation officer for three years and must avoid alcohol and drugs during that time. Greene County Sheriff, Gene Fischer, told CNN that Brock Turner’s picture, conviction information, and address would be available for public knowledge on Ohio’s sex offender registry.

Deputies will also check on him periodically and without warning, to make sure he hasn’t moved out.
