Stanislas Wawrinka “happy” despite inconsistent performance in US Open first round

The No. 1-seeded Serb took a bit of time to get going Wednesday night at the US Open, splitting the opening eight games, before reeling off 14 of the remaining 17 in a 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory over 52nd-ranked Andreas Haider-Maurer of Austria.

Djokovic has entertained spectators in the past with his impersonations of fellow players.

Djokovic’s evening was paced by efficiency on serve, which wasn’t exactly a surprise after he lost just three points on serve against Souza, according to ESPNTennis on Twitter. Djokovic proceeded to win five straight games, as his powerful groundstrokes proved to be too much for his 28-year-old opponent. Haider-Maurer also has a win-loss record of 8-2.

But though it was not planned, Djokovic was in on the joke and very familiar with professional “fan” Cameron Hughes, known to sports fans in four countries for his comedic and dance routines.

Novak Djokovic had to tough start playing his second round match but his ability to finish strong was the key to victory at the US Open.

“I have never played Andreas on a hard court before so it took a while to get used to his positioning”, he said.

Haider-Maurer made his mark early in the set taking the first game while signs showed that his knee began to bother him. He didn’t give Haider-Maurer a single break-point opportunity. Nadal improves to 22-1 in his last 23 matches at Flushing Meadows.

The number one seed will now play Italian Andreas Seppi in round three.

Djokovic gave Haider-Maurer credit for bringing a blistering first serve.

“So far this year it’s probably been the best year I have had”, said Keys.
